  2. Now, I don’t want to start any kind of DAW war…
…but up until now, I’ve made good use of FLStudio and Ableton Live. Recently I got convinced into buying Cubase.
It’s a hell of a learning curve coming from FL and Live, but I’ve gotta say that so far I’m pleased with it. In the past I’ve found working with audio to be a ball ache, but with Cubase I’m happily arranging drums in audio and definitely seeing (hearing?) results!
For anyone just getting into production it could seem a bit daunting, and I probably wouldn’t recommend it simply because of the time and energy spent in Cubase could be better spent on having fun experimenting quickly with other DAWs. Once you’re at the stage where you really need intricate editing and can benefit from complicated routing, it’s a godsend.
I might also add that it hasn’t crashed on me yet… (touch wood)

  3.
A bit of a spending spree lately has led me to replace my aging Ecler HAK 310 mixer with a Pioneer DJM-909, in an attempt to get back into turntablism.
Gotta say I’m really liking the 909, it has everything I wanted and more. One of the main things I wanted was post-fader FX so delay/reverb can be applied to scratches, but other FX like the fader filter (turning the volume or master faders into high/low/band pass filters) and ducking echo (adding an echo when the channel is cut out) are amazing!
Hopefully this will lead to more recorded mixes, but my other purchase is distracting me…

  4. New Area Zero tracks up on the Soundcloud!

As some of you may know, I’ve been collaborating with SDM under the guise of ‘Area Zero’.

We’re continually adding bits to our Soundcloud, and have just updated it with our latest work. ‘Liquid Night’ is an epic, trance-influenced dubstep piece whilst ‘Everyday’ sends a nod out to the original steppers out there, together with the heavy use of a classic breakbeat which will put a smile on any junglists face.
